Ok, normally I don’t do this.. but there are so many idiots in Second life using the -=Bloodlines=- vampire fangs to ‘recruit’ noobs into their ranks that they have finally earned a special place on my blog.
These people ride the short bus of vampires, they are the skanky rotting corpses amongst the undead, the would-be social climbers who don’t give a shit about the quality of their ranks.
For those people who don’t know about the -=Boodlines=- fangs, the way it works is (basically) this:
- Person with fangs ‘bites’ you. You get a pop up in world saying that so-and-so wants to bite you, and asking if you accept.
- You accept.
- Your avie gets a set of ‘bite marks’, and his/her name is registered on the -=Bloodlines=- website.
If you don’t want to roleplay under the -=Bloodlines=- game system.. it’s no big deal. However.. if at sometime in the future you wish to play, you can’t choose your own bloodline because you are already registered as belonging to a bloodline.
Sort of sucks, huh?
Now let me clarify something here: I don’t think the -=Bloodlines=- products are bad products.. just the opposite. I’ve been a gamer too, any product that help keep the game honest is a good thing. With that said though, the -=Bloodlines=- line of products does have a huge hole that permits abuse and rank leveling that is fully unrelated to the game itself.
To their credit, -=Bloodline=- has addressed this issue by creating and releasing a free, transferable garlic necklace to ward off -=Bloodlines=- vampires. You can read more about it on their blog. Please be aware that this product is not effective against non-=Bloodlines=- products.. and -=Bloodlines=- does get a bad rap from some of these look alike products.
Now.. on to the idiots.
If you are on my Idiots list it’s because you tried to ‘animate’ my avatar using a -=Bloodlines=- product with out asking me first or engaging me in the appropriate role play that would have led to my avatar being ‘bitten’. Congratulations on being a complete idiot who doesn’t understand the limits of simple role play, or the rules associated with the product you are using.

Actually, people can liege to anyone and be in any bloodline they wish. They can even start their own. There are potions and other tools to get your soul back and you can give it to whomever you wish. I do agree, however, that some people are real jerks and just go biting whoever they can for the soul count and that’s just no fun at all.

There are a couple of FAQ’s that both support this, but getting your soul back to pledge it to another is not without some RP repercussions.
From the Bloodlines website (FAQ Section):
“Unfortunately, we can’t undo a bite. Once you’re bitten by someone, it’s permanent. However, just because someone else has your soul doesn’t mean that you’re linked to them, you can still pledge allegiance to anyone or join any clan.”
“There are a couple of ways your soul can be moved. You can bargain with the person who has your soul, and the person you’d like to have it can get it using the Soul Reaper. If they refuse to bargain with you, you can drink the Electrum potion, and decide who your soul goes to. The avatar receiving your soul will have to ransom another soul in exchange for yours.”
The point is that there are people playing the Bloodlines game biting people without the role play that Bloodlines says should be part of the ‘bite’ scenario. These people are biting indiscriminately simply to gain rank in the game, and this is a practice that is discouraged by the creators of the game.
You can read the Bloodlines blog (http://www.slbloodlines.com/blog/?p=52) to see that random biting is discouraged. One person who tried to bite me (ONLY Thor), had changed the Bloodlines HUD so that it requested a ‘hug’, as opposed to a ‘bite’ (though I still got the pop-up stating my name would be registered on the Bloodlines website should I accept, yada yada).. and indication of how low some players will stoop to accelerate their rise through Bloodlines ranks. It is these ‘leeches’, and their disreputable behaviour, that I am addressing in my post.

I first want to say that I’m appalled and angered by the tactics of “Thor” that you mentioned. There is no excuse for such a subversive and deceitful tactic.
It is tragic that spampires are out there. And I believe that there are many more than most of us even know about. The true players, and by that I mean the ones who are more worried about the experience than numbers, do not engage in this behavior. I, personally, don’t even approach the subject of a bite until the third or four time I spoken to someone over a period of days. Even then, I won’t offer to bite unless I think the person would also be interested in turning as well.
By then, I’ve had them to my house, introduced them to members of my coven, and gotten to know a little about them first. After all, we want to know more about the people we are bringing into our clan to know if the person is likely to do the things you are mentioning above – a vetting if you will. There are also protected locations on our sim that is revealed once a person has turned, and we don’t want to show them if they would be likely to be ejected from the coven, or turn to another.
So for all the aforementioned, the clan and the grid benefits from close and careful selection. If all else fails, and they or we don’t think they’d fit, I had the pleasure of meeting someone new – which is why I started playing SL in the first place.
So my point is please, to all who read, don’t assume that all bloodlines players are irresponsible and immature. There is a core of dedicated players who enjoy the game, enjoy the socialization, and the common bond that a blood-thurst creates – and go to great extremes to preserve a positive reputation for those of us who play. If you are a bloodlines player, please take a minute to get to know people and think about how what you’re doing affects everyone in the grid. Worry about the game and not the numbers.

Thanks for your input, Faelista.
I agree with what you say, and I hope people reading the post don’t think I’m ranting about Boodlines, because that’s not my intent.
I’ve played vampire character under V:TM gaming system. I do like the idea of keeping things random and honest. But c’mon people.. make sure the person you’re intending to bite actually wants to play the game.. ok?
